Knots for Knowledge is an intimate, sustainable, and culturally respectful tiny library nestled within the heart of the Uros community on the floating islands of Lake Titicaca in Puno, Peru. Inspired by the ancient quipu, a symbol of mathematical precision and communication for the Uros people, this library aims to be a contemporary beacon of learning and connection.
The design embraces sustainability by using locally sourced totora reeds, honoring a material that has been an integral part of Uros culture for centuries. The organic, curvilinear forms of the library seamlessly blend with the natural surroundings, respecting the ecosystem of the largest navigable lake in the world, Lake Titicaca.
Inside, the library creates a tranquil oasis for learning. The shelves, crafted from
recycled and reclaimed materials, house a curated collection of books, preserving
the oral traditions and wisdom of the Uros community.
